EOL import: Data providers should be credited!
We provide the option for maintainers to import a classification into their Scratchpad via EOL. Obviously, a lot of effort went into producing these data, so if you use this import, then you should acknowledge the data provider. Here are some tips on how to find out whom to cite:
- Species 2000 & ITIS Catalogue of Life: Go to the Catalogue of Life website and search for one of the species you imported. On the 'Species details' page for this species you can find the 'Source database'. Click on the link for this source database and check under 'Taxonomic coverage' whether all the taxa you imported originated from this database. If not you need to search for another taxon that is not covered and cite more than one database. Catalog of Life provides a page where you can find out how to cite the database you used. Go to this page and find the database you need via its short name.
- Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS): Instructions on how to cite data in ITIS are available on the ITIS website.
- Other databases: For any other databases, click on the link for this provider and look for information on how to cite the data.
On your Scratchpad you can then create a page with acknowledgements and add a menu link to this page.
